Sensei Don Seiler

Don Seiler first became interested in martial arts training in 1988 when he joined a beginners Aikido session at Melbourne Aikikai under Sensei Tony Graziano (Godan, Aikido, U.S. Aikido Federation). In addition to Aikido, Melbourne Aikikai offered instruction in Iaido, Kenjutsu, and Judo. Don’s attention quickly expanded to include attendance at each and every class offered at Melbourne Aikikai – an endeavor that greatly expanded his base of knowledge. Over the next several years Don’s focus shifted to training in Judo where the classes were smaller and the individual attention from senior ranking black belts was greater – something that an energetic teenager with a taste for physical challenges could not resist. He developed strong relationships with instructors John Ellis (Sandan Kodokan Judo), Andre Merrill (Sandan Kodokan Judo), and David Ellis (Sandan Kodokan Judo). Throughout high school and college from 1989 to 1996, Don continued his training at Melbourne Aikikai focusing his attention on training completely in the martial arts in all aspects of physical, mental, and spiritual development. Reading and meditation were as important to him as physical exercises. Although he competed and performed well in several Judo competitions early in his Judo training, he decided that tournament style applications watered down the martial art aspect of his training. He exchanged competitions for extra hours in the dojo learning practical applications of the martial arts in self-defense situations, especially those considered against the rules in competition. After graduating in 1996 with a BS in Chemical Engineering, Don embarked on a career in Texas. In 1998 Don moved to Texas to accept a position in project management consulting. While living in Houston Don met Dr. Walter Marker (Godan, National Teaching Committee Member, Aikido Association of America and Owner/Chief Instructor of Seishinkan Dojo, Dickinson, TX). Don trained exclusively in Aikido for two years under the direction of Dr. Walter Marker. During this time Don continued to gain experience in business management consulting, a career involving a great deal of travel and numerous cultural and strategic learning opportunities. Don always took advantage of the martial arts training opportunities in the many small towns he visited on business. In 2000 Don moved to San Antonio, TX, where he could be closer to his older brother, Kevin. In May 2000, Don began formal training in Matsubayashi-ryu Karate-do with Kevin as his primary instructor. Don also received instruction during this period from Kevin’s long-time friend and instructor from Panama City, FL, Sensei Gene Orr (7th dan kyoshi, World Matsubayashi-Ryu Karate-do Association). Don was promoted to the rank of Shodan (1st degree black belt) in Matsubayashi-Ryu Karate-Do in October 2001 and Nidan (2nd degree black belt) in August 2006. Currently, Don lives in Lakeville, MN and teaches individual and group karate-do sessions by appointment.
